Top Chef Final - Was There A Dry Eye In The House?

What a season... and what a final. Class, style, good food and three chefs who all could have been top chef made it to the final. For us TC fans, a final without the bad guy (girl), the drama, the fights. We got to see three chefs cook and that is what we love.

Congratulations to Chef Michael. Welcome to being a Top Chef. You did it with class and style. Just like season one with Chef Harold.

Who would have ever dreamed it would come down to the two brothers? Bryan, you too are a class act and we know how proud you are of your little brother. What a proud moment for the two of you to stand there together...

and to have their mom there. How can you not have looked at this shot and not seen the love of a mom for both her sons. WOW, the tears were flowing then.

Chef Kevin, we love you man. What a class act and bad ass chef you are. Thank you for a GREAT season. We wish you all the best and have a feeling the Fan Favorite is in your future.

Your mom, as well as all of us new fans, are so proud of you.

To all three of you, thank you for a wonderful season and for making Top Chef the show we fans have been wanting to see. We wish all of you the best and hope you will drop by our little kitchen and visit your fans here.

How effing predictable. I don't care what ANYONE from the franchise says... Yes, I read Tom's blog, and it's SHITE! -- Kevin AND Bryan were robbed.

And, we too, were robbed. Ilan Hall... Hosea Rosenberg... now Michael the Pissant Voltaggio. Great.

Top Chef lost me for good last night. "Reality" cooking shows have now died the ugliest of deaths for me and for everyone who was watching with me last night. We were all disgusted.
Totally disgusted.

I was really disppointed by the finale. I knew about halfway through that Kevin wasn't going to win. But, I felt really strongly that Bryan would. All the judges comments seemed to lean that way. I was never a fan of Michael and his bad attitude. If his food was that much better than Bryan's I think it was bad editing on the producers part.

Well I for one was thrilled for Michael to win! He is a damm good chef and he deserved the win,get over it people, don't watch it if you can't deal with others winning!

All 3 and Jen were the best on the show!

I think the wrong Voltaggio won, but the shot where Mom hugged one son and silently consoled the other was a tearjerker.

Yeah, I was disappointed. Halfway through the episode, I had a feeling Kevin wasn't going to win. His lack of 'help' put him in a sour mood and that definitely transferred through with his food. I wanted him to win so bad.

But for Mike to win???? No! He's a talented chef, but he doesn't have the leadership quality to be a TOP CHEF. Throughout the competition, he made snide remarks, bragged like crazy and was tempermental with others in the kitchen. Bryan showed class, leadership and talent. If not Kevin, then Bryan should have won.

Class and style? This is sarcasm, right?

To compare him with Chef Harold? Well, that's just blasphemy.

I think it was totally classless for Padma to say, "Kevin, you're NOT the winner". They've never done that before, and was in poor taste, considering what a great competitor Kevin has been all season. To quote Kevin from a recent interview:

"It was really frustrating because one of the best parts about making it to the finals is that you don’t have to get sent home, you don’t lose, you either win or you don’t. And to have to deal with that, I feel like they stole something from me. I feel very much cheated, and it hurts me. I was embarrassed, and in many ways I felt disrespected. It hurt."

SHAME ON YOU BRAVO!

Here's a link to the complete interview with Kevin. What a class act! Can you say "FAN FAVORITE"??

K-Dogg, I totally agree with you. Why couldn't Padma announce the winner with all three there. I don't blame Kevin for being embarrassed. What a classless way to end the show.

this blog is BS, and whoever wrote it is naive. michael is a phony asshole. after brian said that he was proud that he made it to the finale with his brother, you could tell that michael had a hard time reciprocating the comment and it came off as totally insincere. to anyone who said michael deserved it, it can be easily argued that brian and kevin also deserved it. "Class and style"?!?! are you kidding me? did we watch the same show? michael talked more shit than any other cheftestant, e.g., when he talked shit on jen, robin, kevin, brian...take your fucking pick, he talked shit on everyone. i am so done with this show. first hosea--who seemed like he just wanted to beat stefan, rather than win the competition--and now michael, who is so immature he can't even PRETEND to support his brother. michael is a piece of trash and so is this show.

Get real. I used to be a fan, but the last 2 seasons were SO disappointing. At the very end, the reward goes to the wrong person. So we watch and hope that the real winner WILL finally win, BUT they continue to pick the bottom of the final 3. No more for me!! Kevin and Bryan were the best BY FAR!!!! Kevin is the real winner for me.

Well done Preeti you made Kevin loose Top Chef. No wonder he was so mad with that bitch! Now we have the ever vomit inducing Michael Voltaggio as Top Chef. I hope his mom is proud of him as no one else is.

Best thing about this show now is Gail's breasts.

First, congratulations to Michael Voltaggio. I'm not sure I agree with the "style and class" comment made by our blog hosts, but the judges decided that he cooked the best meal of the three in the finale, and that's what the judges base their decision on. They don't see the backstage, er, in-the-kitchen drama, they don't see the arguments or disrespect (e.g., Michael versus Robin in Restaurant Wars) or [lack of] leadership; they base the decision on the food. Yes, I admit that I would have preferred Kevin to have won, but based on the judges' decision, Michael's food was better.

That being said, I wouldn't blame bad editing on the producers. I'd blame it on the editors for choosing the wrong (by our definition) or misleading (by theirs) clips.

In seasons 3-5 (seasons 1 and 2 only had 2 chefs in the finale), Padma announced just the winner. Yes, the third-place finisher was obvious in each case (Casey, Richard, and Carla, respectively, choked), but she still didn't explicitly call them out. I'm disappointed they did so to Kevin as if he choked as well; while his food wasn't the best that night [according to the judges], he didn't screw up appreciably more than the others: Bryan underseasoned his first two courses, Kevin botched the matsutake mushroom and undercooked the pork belly, Michael undercooked his spot prawn and overcooked his dessert. I suspect the thought process on the part of the producers was "Gee, the last three seasons we said '${name}, congratulations;' we should mix it up this year." I don't agree with it, but I think I can understand it.

Lots of anonymous anger here. I had a different take.

Like just about everybody, I'd hoped Kevin would win. More than anyone else this or any season, he displayed both tremendous craft and remarkable attitude. What I remember is the Restaurant Wars loss... Rather than go off like anybody else in the Glad Room, he respectfully said he was too angry to talk about Judge's Table. In his statement, he broke the ultimate rule of reality TV: Play to the camera.

The choice of the arrogant Voltaggio brother was not a surprise. Michael showed honest passion in his answer as to why he should win. (And I want to hear how he went from the pickiest eater to living food!) Also, the judges loved seeing his creativity, even when it didn't always pan out in taste. It reminded me of Christian Soriano's win on Runway. What regular person is going to wear his clothes?

In the end, I believe that Kevin Gillespie will gain the most out of being on Top Chef. Everybody wants to eat his food, so I'm sure there's a wait list at his restaurant. He also proved a great personality. At 26, Kevin's only begun and he'll be around for a long time;

What a great finale. I was rooting for Kevin, but honestly, I felt that all three chefs were deserving of the win. The three finalists were all so classy. This was the best season of Top Chef in a while.
