At 9:43 AM, Claire said...: While Toby Young's comments can be harsh, it is refreshing to see the judges actually disagree strongly on some dishes. The difference in opinions makes it more "real world" for the contestants and viewers. Not every person is going to like the work of any one chef, no matter how highly touted and respected that chef may be.

In the previous shows, the judges had fallen into the trap of agreeing too closely on the outcome of a dish. There needs to be a variety of judges with different tastes and preferences in food, reflecting what these chefs actually face every day. This is an opportunity for chefs to learn what people REALLY say about their food in general - not just from the ones who strongly liked, or strongly disliked, their dishes in their restaurants/catering services. When you are feeding 18 people at a dinner table, you have to consider what will "wow" most of them, because you can't please them all.
