The summer before my senior year in high school I took a trip to Australia and New Zealand as part of a student ambassador program. Part of the program was to experience a new culture and the things that go along with that culture, including the food. I loved pavlova and all of the lamb in New Zealand, but one of the most disgusting things I've ever tasted is Veggie-mite. It's absolutely foul. However, most of the Australian teens I talked to thought that peanut butter was nasty, so I guess it just depends on what you were brought up with.
I've had marmite. It's just foul. However... Mark said something about doing a marmite molasses, which might actually improve it (the sweet would help a lot), so maybe Rocco's not totally off his rocker for praising the pizza.
As a child growing up with a lot of Brits and Aussies, Marmite and Vegemite were often served to me on toast. Since my mom raised me to be exceedingly polite, even if I suspected someone was trying to poison me, I choked them down with a smile. Marmite is not too bad, kind of like concentrated beef bouillon or Bovril. Vegemite, on the other hand, is a foul paste scraped up from the underside of hell. Of course, many Aussies think peanut butter is pretty awful, too.
We have Vegemite in our pantry that we brought back from Australia but we haven't opened it.
I tried Vegemite or Marmite once, 20 years ago. I don't think I'm ready to try it again, yet. Maybe in another 20 years.
Uggh. This stuff is vile. Must be an acquired taste.
I prefer vegemite but in either case you have to spread it very thinly on something like toast.
