I'm a member of this esteemed group of foodies and wine lovers. The ribbons signify one's rank within the organization. The group has been around since 1248 and the decorations are an ancient holdover to the French roots of our group. The US website is here:

You still look like a bunch of idiots regardless of how long its been around.

This felt a little like an adult version of the "boy/girl scouts"...all with their little merit badges. How does one get those?...

"...and this one is when I went out into the world and saved people from making the wrong wine pairing. This one is from the time I gave the heimlich to a woman choking on a scallop..."

I don't know...wierd.

Hey they have a boutique! Now I can wear the ribbon and medal , watch Top Chef and scoff at the poor service I receive on my couch. Review: I found last nights popcorn to be rather inferior and not paired well with my lemon Vitamin Water.

The color of the ribbon and medal depends on your seniority in the group and/or if you hold a position within the organization. The badges are for the particular office you hold and/or if you participate in the wine society and/or if you are a supporter of our Chaine Foundation or work with Jeune Commis (our young chefs program).

We offer many scholarships for aspiring chefs at all of the major culinary schools. The Chaine also sponsors a Young Chef culinary competition each year. Our wine society, Societe Mondiale du Vin, also sponsors a Young Sommelier Competition with scholarships given to the most promising young people interested in continuing with culinary arts or the study of wine and crafted beverages.

Yes,jack, but all the hardware still makes you look like pompous snoots. This was a tasting, not one of your organization's events. It's great that you sponsor scholarships, and maybe if TC had spent a moment giving their viewers a little more information about your organization there would be fewer "wtf?" comments.

Carlos Fernandez writes a bit about Chaine at his blog today.

Everyone is entitled to their impression of us. That's a given. However, there's more behind the scenes in our organization and that's all I'm trying to bring up here.

I'm guessing that Top Chef called on La Chaine for its expertise since we're dedicated to the appreciation of fine food and wine as well as our philanthropic pursuits. And, the decorations were probably encouraged to heighten the look and feel of the event as well as show our "calling card" as an organization. Cheers!

Jack...

It's just a bit of fun...thank you for doing what Top Chef didn't last night: clarifying who your organization is and what they do within the culinary world to not only encourage fine cuisine but also ensure that fine cuisine will have a future when this cooking/chef popularity wave receeds and the world isn't as sharply focused on it as we are now...god forbid. lol.

Please stop back often and let us know what your experienced pallette thinks of the food concoctions in future episodes!

Thanks,

Could very well be. I'm a foodie but I like a little snark to go with my reality TV chef shows!

jack, forgive me if my first impression of your group was one of pompous snoots. No offense, but to me the hardware was somewhat off-putting because it seemed a little out of context.

Your decorations are fine. Usually when TC gets this "fancy" it is in conjunction with another event; a wedding, a charity event, or an industry party. I'm positive Bravo encouraged your be-ribboned group! Thanks for all your info, this isn't the first time TC has left viewers in the dark. Salud!

ps you're in the right place for a touch of snark! ;)

Jack you are a good sport.

I like a man who likes a little snark. Thanks for joining in. Thank-you for the information on the group.

This shows me that without much information I certainly can make snap judgements.

Wow thanks for the lovefest on the comment party here you guys! All is forgiven... I wasn't all that mad just admittedly a little thin skinned. I forget that these blogs are around for the witty banter and to deconstruct the show. That's why I love this blog and others. Thanks for giving the Chaine a shot. Chef Carlos is a member so we can't be all that bad!

Now, I've got to read Anthony Bourdain's stuff on the Bravo site so if you'll excuse me...
