Does Anyone Want to Win This Thing?
by Chef Back Burner
There was a glimmer of hope last week...a moment of spontaneously skilled cooking, mixed in with teenaged behavior yes, but still....Last week I believed that we had some good cheftestants. Like Tom, I was thinking “Now, they want to win!” Man, were we wrong.
It seems, from the blogs and the boards, that these chefs are working harder for the “Fan Favorite” than they did to actually win the competition. What happened? Was it just too hard to come up with and execute good food? And have any of you worked in a restaurant before? One would think that you all would know how to keep food warm in the kitchen and burgers from overcooking while they wait to be plated and that wine in a necessity in an Italian restaurant. Maybe what they should have learned was that without their wait staff no one would ever get to eat their supposedly well made food while it still tastes good. Maybe chef’s need to learn to appreciate them better instead of sniping at them the way Cliff was....I felt badly for his waiter.
So , they get done with their challenge and they’re standing there in front of the judges, who are obviously not happy, and they let the BIG boys ride. What? They all suddenly have morals...
Sam as a team leader last night made bad choices for his team...Watermelon gnocchi? Hello people watermelon is watermelon. It’s good, it’s refreshing stop trying to turn it into something else. And I know I mentioned it before but it bears repeating...NO WINE IN AN ITALIAN RESTAURANT! You might as well not bother making the food...Italian food flourishes with the appropriate wine accompaniment. It’s like the key that unlocks flavors in the meat and the sauces. If he had spent the time that he wasted griping at Mikey and doing everything he could have done....Hello, he just won two in a row!...focusing on the menu and the overview of the situation then he maybe could have...um...I don’t know....WON! But no, all this weirdness in his choices and nobody stood in front of the judges and pointed out the obvious...did they all feel like too close of friends...come on people we’re down to six...stop singing “Cum-by-ah” and starting singing the “Sammy Sucked Tonight” blues!Moving on...
Cliff on the other hand forcibly takes control of the Front of House because he would like the challenge and then typically pulls the “I know more than you do” on the waiter. When I start trying to accomplish a task that I’ve never done before I have a tendency to find the “cheat sheet” whether its an instruction manual or advice from a person who has done that particular task before, I find that type of thing invaluable. But no Cliff pull what is become an “expected” where he raises his voice, became confrontational and over rules everyone around him. And you would have thought that Marcel and Elia would have learned from the speed bump formerly known as Mia. But again, no! They stood there when he was asked who should go home and he said “Not me, pick one of them.” and they said nothing.
So now I know what you are thinking...
Would the judges have respected the underling cheftestants opinions
about the BIG boys? ............who knows but it would have been interesting to see.
Would the producers really let the two that remind them the most of Harold go leaving Elia and the two squabbling 8th graders for Hawaii? ..............maybe not, but wouldn’t that be a conclusion, if not for the cooking, then for the slap fights.
Anyway....I think I’ll make my final word on the subject this. If everyone wasn’t so worried about how annoying Marcel is (and he is annoying) they might take a page from his book....not the one with the rap written on it...the one where he came to win and is still trying to win at all costs.

well said!
You know, I don't always agree with you, but I have to say that this time time I do 100%.
I really think we are stuck watch Survivor - Kitchen Island. Not Top Chef. The goal is not winning the challenges but getting the others kicked off first.
That's actually soooo true and a good way of putting it, trish. It's like if someone looks worse to the judges than you than you're safe.
Last night's elimination was not because Mikey sucked last night it was because he's sucked in the past. Which Tom himself has said they try to avoid doing. They try to go challenge by challenge but last night it was like everyone sucked equally so like in Survivor when there is a tie...what do they do? They go to the person who's had the most elimination votes in the past. Need I say more...
He, he, he
"Survivor - Kitchen Island"
You make me smile!
These people are idiots. With 4 dishes and 4 people, you DO NOT have your designated front-of-the-house person as the expeditor.
Put Elia in the front-of-the-house. Nice shy smile. Cute but comprehendible accent. A little slow and sensitive in the kitchen.
Cliff on the line the entire time. He's received kudos on EVERY meat dish he's prepared. And it really doesn't matter if he barks at the condiments and utensils.
Marcel on-the-line enough to prepare his tempura dish but also fulfilling the role of expeditor.
Zoe
please correct me if i'm wrong: cliff said he wanted to work the front of the house because that's what he does at his job back home. why would he still have a job back home if that is the case based on his performance?
i think that cliff probably conspired with ilan and sam to sabottage marcel's "team" since team leaders are either winners or are sent packing.
Ooooo...that some lofty aligations but not entirely unbelievable!Hmmmmmm.... This Chef must pause to ponder....
As far as his job...I thought he said he wanted the challenge since he's never done that...I could be so wrong since at 10 pm I'm not as sharp as I probly should be and while I try to take notes...sometimes I wake up the next morning and look and say things like..."Marcel did a rap? How many glasses of wine did I have with dinner last night?"
Just discovered this blog. Could I please beg that you change the screen and typefont colors to something less dark and blue-on-blue? PLEASE!
So many interesting opinions here, but I really was left wondering if Cliff was in on a sabotage. Could that be possible? On the other TC blog, there is mention of a preview for next week and Marcel's hair being cut by the other cheftestants. I do not have any idea where this is being seen, can't find it, but that too would be really taking things way too far. This season is really about personalities or, the other option, trying to just stay in the game and not about putting yourself out there and showing how great you can cook or be a leader or even be civil. I do not know if I would watch again next year if this is the standard they are setting for the show. Soooo disappointing after a really good season with good people on TC 1. The only bright spot has been Ted Allen having been on a few times this year.
SO, a little off-topic, but...
OMG!!!! Did anyone else notice the fly on Cliff's quickfire dish when they showed it up close??????? If you watch it again, look at the meat on the left side. It walks around, and flies away.
GROSS!!!!! Board of Health!!!
**The goal is not winning the challenges but getting the others kicked off first.**
That smacks to me of major immaturity and insecurity. Not on of the so called ugh "Big boys" should win this contest. They don't have what it takes.
Too bad Toms got a hard on for sam. Hugs mistake.
*Hugs mistake.*
Huge mistake lol
I think Mike got shafted. How can you toss the guy that didnt make mistakes. Cliff sucked, Watermelon cheese is disgusting, I am going to toss mike because I think he isnt working hard enough. He made history last week, where is the no work thing!
I think they clearly wanted more interaction and less cooking. I assume some test group said the cooking was boring but everyone hating the blonde last year was fun. Every week the previews are loaded with Marcel stuff.
Read Harold and Lee Anee's blog for this week. They both agreed the biggest failing was the front of the restaurant (I could not believe Cliff ignored the judges for several minutes, no conversation, nothing). But both also said they felt it was Mike's time to go. Apparently Lee Anne is on site during filming and she hints at something next week that seems to have more to do with "Realtity TV" than cooking or food. If that is true, than it is like Survivor and I, for what it is worth, am not interested in that type of TV. It is supposed to be about the food and cooking. Shame on you Bravo for allowing the show to sink to this level.
Maybe I was wrong about Mike. Maybe not.
The reality issue is I dont think that the "Producers" are trying to ramp up this feud thing. I think they got people who would clash and just let the pot simmer.
I have a feeling someone walks in with a black eye or arm in a sling :) Tom's comment came as a result of a statement regarding the ongoing dispute.
Also, I may not be remembering correctly but didn't Cliff say he wanted to try the front for the experience AND to keep the guys in the kitchen speeded up?
Actually, I believe he did what he could to slow things down hoping they would get the blame; he wasn't speeding anything up..The kitchen was trying to speed him up.
Listen to his answer regarding Tom's question on why he wanted the to be out front on next rerun.
judy-
I thought I heard Tom say "Wait till you see THEM." at the end of the promo...maybe I heard wrong. Maybe they all shaved their heads...Hell, it would be something interesting for a change.
edward-
I agree. I think the producers struck what they thought was oil with the casting of this season but what they are discovering is the audience, as well as the judges are not amused and are being turned off by these chefs' behavior...But like I said before, the 2nd season of any reality show is almost always a "trip and fall". I think Project Runway was lucky...they had 2 first seasons before their second season disaster.
Well I think we can all agree that it can only get better from here....ha!
Yes, they want win, by DEFAULT and SABOTAGE. Cliff definitely says in the car to Elia and Marcel that he wants to run the front b/c "that's what I do"?? B.S. Cliff. You're an exec. chef. and it can be seen on your Bravo bio video. We all know you're not a team player, you're just a "player". You're always on the losing team trying to sabotage anyone you can. If you're such a front-of-the-house man, where were you on the holiday ep.??? If Ilan has the nerve to try and get Elia to set Marcel up for a fall, you know he said the same thing to buddy Cliff, or it was probably Cliff's idea in the first place. How hard is it to focus on the VIP's for diner service. Picking up the chicken and burgers late... even the kid at Mickey D's can get that one right. The judges even called him on that and said his slow service jeopardized his team mates. I was glad to see they turned the tables on Cliff. I'll bet he thought it would be like the other team challenges where the team leader usually takes the credit or the fall. Ha Ha. Nice call judges on the Cliff maneuver. As for Mikey, I agree with Padma that Cliff should've left, but Cliff's proven to be the better cook/chef than Mikey and they couldn't let him leave just yet. The wine glasses excuse was weak for sure. We all know he was told not to get them after Sam chose to forego the wine. I would've sent him home for his sous chefness, which is what they sorta implied (the list). If Ilan had picked Mikey over Cliff, Sam would've left for his nauseous desert and decision to not serve wine. I think Cliff and Sam are having personal conflicts of their own. Why he picked Ilan over Cliff first, knowing Marcel wouldn't pick him anyway speaks volumes. Maybe Sam knew Cliff would be the best one to sabotage Marcel's team and he predicted Marcel would choose an exec. chef over Mikey to be on his team. I know, too much "pscyho" analysis going on here.
We all know that Elia was ready to be axed for slow service AND being the leader on the holiday challenge. Cliff tried to make it seem she was doing it again or that the leader (Marcel) would take the heat for slow service. I've worked in the front and back at restaurants, and what usually happens is the waiter "waits" for the orders to go out, not the other way around. Especially when VIP's are to be served, there's no excuse for slow service (from the front). I'm just so glad the judges didn't blame Marcel or Elia for Cliff's poor service. Yeah, they want to win by making the others look bad.
The real Irony is that everyone on blogs like this are complaining about the show but the ratings are sky high.
I believe people want to know things about the Chefs. they dont want a cooking show, but to get up close and personal.
I think a gentle balance between cooking and the eprsonal lives is tricky but can be done without survivor type antics.
And the 15 extra minutes on the one show really added to it. I recorded it and watched a rerun before I saw it, and there was alot more depth to the longer one. I say we start a petition to get top chef to go to a 1 1/2 hour format. American idol and that dance show run more than an hour, and that is network TV. they rerun each episode so many times, lets stretch it out!
edward,
I think...and this is just my opinion mind you...that now that we are...what?...10 years, for even number's sake, into the reality TV trend, that veiwers expect a certain amount of bullshit in any show, simply "reality" or "reality-competition". But they also know that the editing has a heavy hand in what we see. I think they come to blogs like this one to voice an opinion. That's mainly why I'm here. And to see if any of the participants have more light to shine on the situation...since the chef's visits to many of us have been frequent.
But I do think that there is something about the purity of any of the first seasons of BRAVO's "reality-competitions" where we see creativity and personality in an even mix. The second season usually starts to weed out the veiwers who are willing to put up with more personality to get a glimpse of the creativity the editors are willing to show us...and by the third season they...the production...really push their limits or calm down and stick with how much we were willing to take in season 2. That's yet to be determined with TOP CHEF.
Right now, what we're dealing with on the boards and blogs are the feelings of people who are weighing out how much reality they will take while they are trying to veiw the competition...that includes me too!
delusional much? bravo is that you?
Anon 3:17
If you're gonna say something rude...put your name on it...own it. If not, then at least make rude and intelligent.
What difference would putting my name on my post make? I'm sure from reading the completely fruitcake drivel that you spouted post 6:10 am that merely having my name would give you reason to come up with something delusional about me as well. Pffffffft. Insulting my intelligence (look in a mirror) because I don't leave my name? Doesn't wash. Suppose you should remove my remarks as they (whether intelligently or not) at least make sense (well COMMON SENSE anyway), as opposed to said fruitcake/drivel. LOL
Actually, besides calling what I put out there "delusional" and "fruitcake drivel" you haven't really said anything new or even on the subject of TOP CHEF...Or maybe you have but I wouldn't know because many people post "annon" so I guess you could take credit for any of their intelligent statements.
And no! I'm not going to remove your comments...insults are insults...and the world is filled with things you don't like but have to put up with and that includes you.
I'm surprised you actually came back to see if anyone responded to you. Considering you don't like what I have to say. I'm sorry for that...feel free to remove us from your Bookmark list.
Have a lovely rest of your day!
marcel was sabotoged by mike
